Joe Renzetti's Biography

Joe Renzetti was born on January 4, 1941 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Joe first became interested in music at age six after he heard a guitarist at a wedding. Renzetti began his career in the early 60s as the in-house guitarist at Cameo Records in Philadelphia; among the songs he played guitar on are "Let's Twist Again," "The Mashed Potato," "The Bristol Stomp," "Tallahassee Lassie," "The Limbo Rock," and "Palisades Park." Joe then moved to New York and did the arrangements on such hit recordings as "Sunny" by Bobby Hebb, "Ninety Eight Point Six" by Keith, "Apple, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie" by Jay and the Techniques, and "Mandy" by Barry Manilow. Moreover, Renzetti worked as an arranger on either albums and/or singles for such artists as Tiny Tim, Neil Diamond, Tony Orlando, Jerry Butler, Wayne Newton, and Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs. Joe next went to Hollywood to try his luck as a film composer and landed the plumb job of doing the music for the terrific rock'n'roll biopic "The Buddy Holly Story." Renzetti taught the actors portraying Holly and his band how to sing and play their instruments live, which was a first for a movie. Joe deservedly won an Academy Award for Best Adaptation Score for his outstanding contributions to "The Buddy Holly Story." Renzetti has collaborated with director Gary Sherman on numerous occasions: "Dead & Buried" (this is perhaps Joe's single most beautifully graceful and haunting film score to date), "Vice Squad," "Mysterious Two," "Wanted: Dead or Alive," "Poltergeist III," "Lisa," "Murderous Vision," three episodes of the TV series "Missing Persons," and "39: A Film by Carroll McKane." In addition, Joe has worked with director Frank Henenlotter three times; he supplied the scores for "Frankenhooker" and both "Basket Case" sequels. Renzetti did an especially chilling and effective score for the hit killer doll horror winner "Child's Play." Outside of his film work, Joe composes music for orchestras, chamber groups, and solo artists. In his spare time Joe Renzetti composes his own music in a state-of-the-art recording studio he created in an 18th century log cabin that he owns in Upper Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
